SDSU Women Win Big West Tennis Title

Sondra Mitchell beat Tracie Johnstone, 5-7, 7-6 (8-6), 6-2, to help San Diego State defeat UC Santa Barbara, 5-2, and win the Big West Conference Tennis Championships Saturday at Ojai.

Susan Hawke of San Diego State snuck by Debbie Goldberger, 6-7 (5-7), 6-2, 6-4, as the Aztecs took four of the six singles matches.

SDSU also won the only doubles match, 7-5, 7-6 (9-7).

TRACK

The Point Loma Nazarene men’s and women’s track team won triangular meets at Masters College. The women, led by Connie Navarro’s victories in the shotput and long jump, beat Biola, 93-33. The Masters scored nine.

The Point Loma Nazarene men, led by Dan Raajtes’ high jump of 6-10, scored 69 points to Biola’s 64 and The Masters’ 16.

SOFTBALL

The University of San Diego women’s softball team swept a doubleheader from Stanford, 8-2 and 5-1. USD’s Lisa Ziomkowski went the distance in the first game, striking out nine and walking none, while Dina Tarr won the second game, striking out three and walking three. Jeannie Weinshim homered for USD (30-25) in the nightcap.

Kathy Fogg and Diana Moreno threw shutouts in UC San Diego’s nonconference doubleheader sweep of Whittier, 7-0 and 10-0. UC San Diego, ranked No. 1 in the West Region and second in the nation in Division III, improved to 32-7. Whittier is 14-17.

UC San Diego’s Tracy Kehr went four for seven with two RBIs, and Dana Jenkins was five for eight, scored five times and had four stolen bases.

No. 1-ranked UCLA took a doubleheader from host U.S. International, 8-0 and 12-0. UCLA improved to 35-4. USIU fell to 15-34-1.

San Diego State lost a doubleheader to the fourth-ranked Fresno State, 4-0 and 10-3, in the Big West Conference. The host Aztecs fell to 18-34-1 and 9-23 in the Big West. Fresno State improved to 45-12 and 23-7.

BASEBALL

Chris Stout lined a two-out single in the bottom of the eighth inning to score Jim Keen with the winning run, giving University of San Diego a 8-7 extra inning victory over visiting Nevada-Reno in the second game of a Western Conference Athletic Conference doubleheader.

Nevada-Reno beat USD (19-30-1), 13-0, in the opener.

Tony Battilega set a USD career pitching appearance record with his 83rd appearance in the second game.

U.S. International’s Kevin Tahan went four for four with three RBIs to lead the Gulls to a 14-5 victory over Grand Canyon College in the first game of a doubleheader. USIU’s Jeff Oswalt scattered eight hits over seven innings.

Grand Canyon won the second game, 15-8.

San Diego State’s Eric Kristofferson went two for two with an RBI and scored a run in the Aztecs’ 4-1 victory in the opener of a Western Athletic Conference doubleheader. The Aztecs’ Anthony Johnson had a triple and a RBI, and Rob Brown struck seven in going the distance.

Colorado State (13-29, 4-14) won the second game, 6-3. SDSU is 31-20, 12-6.

BASKETBALL

The final 15 players were selected for the San Diego Select team that will play host to the AAU-Soviet 1989 junior boys’ basketball tour Saturday, May 13, at San Diego State’s Peterson gym.

Bill Peterson of Kearny was named head coach. He will be assisted by John Farrell of Torrey Pines, Dennis Cane of San Diego High and David Ybarra of Sweetwater.

Game time is 7:30, with opening ceremonies at 7:10. Tickets are $25 and $10, with proceeds benefitting the San Diego Police Athletic League.

CREW

San Diego State won the novice four division of the Newport Regatta at Newport Harbor. USD was fifth. In varsity eights, USD finished fourth behind winner UCLA. USD took third in the freshman eights.

MEN’S VOLLEYBALL

UC San Diego won the Pacific Coast Volleyball Conference championship over Laverne, 13-15, 15-8, 15-11, 15-6.

Jeff Babcock led UC San Diego with 25 kills, while Nate Brown added 21. UC San Diego finished its season 12-16 and ranked 20th in the NCAA Division III.
