THE HIGH SCHOOLS : City Section Baseball : San Fernando Squanders 4-Run Lead

El Camino Real rallied for two runs in the sixth inning, then four in the seventh and erased a four-run deficit to shock San Fernando, 6-4, in a Northwest Valley Conference game at San Fernando on Tuesday.

San Fernando led, 4-0, through five innings behind senior right-hander Frank Serna (6-3). After scoring two runs in the sixth, the Conquistadores banged up Serna and relievers John Najar and Hector De La Cruz in the seventh.

Paul Geller and Ryan McGuire opened the seventh with doubles to make it 4-3. After Jason Cohen singled McGuire to third, Serna was relieved by Najar, who gave up a game-tying single to Bobby Kim.

Del Marine followed with an run-scoring double, driving in Cohen. After De La Cruz relieved Najar, Jeff Marks drove in Kim from third with a squeeze bunt.

Right-hander Patrick Treend (3-3) pitched his third consecutive complete game for the Conquistadores. San Fernando (15-4-1, 9-3-1 in league play) stranded 10 baserunners, including two in the the seventh. The Tigers remain a half-game behind Kennedy in the North Valley League.

In other Northwest Valley Conference games:

Granada Hills 12, Canoga Park 1--Gabe Miller pitched a five-hitter and had three hits as Granada Hills won its first conference game of the season, at Lanark Park.

Leading, 3-1, after six innings, the Highlanders exploded for nine runs on seven hits in the top of the seventh. Bill Biers and Tom Condos both had two-run singles in the inning for Granada Hills.

Taft 7, Cleveland 6--Designated-hitter Geoff Ruch’s two-out blooper to center fell between Cleveland outfielders Sean Burwell and Pat Bryant for the game-winning RBI in the eighth inning at Cleveland. Ruch’s double scored Brett Reisner, who had reached base on an error and stole second.

VALLEY PAC-8 CONFERENCE

Sylmar 19, Reseda 1--Joe Contreraz was four for five with four doubles for the Spartans at Sylmar. Teammate Dereck Ornelas added three hits and scored three runs.

Poly 8, Monroe 4--Poly senior outfielder Eddie Chavez was two for four and also picked up his third save in relief at Monroe.

Grant 8, Van Nuys 1--Senior right-hander Javier Delahoya pitched a one-hitter, struck out nine, walked six and contributed two hits at Grant.

Birmingham 6, North Hollywood 3--Senior left-hander David Grisar (3-3) pitched a two-hitter, struck out five and allowed one earned run for Birmingham (6-11, 4-9).
