College Roundup : Bevins’ Blast in Ninth Lifts Master’s, 9-8

Dan Bevins hit a leadoff home run in the bottom of the ninth inning Thursday to lift The Master’s College to a 9-8 nonconference victory over Point Loma.

Bevins’ heroics upstaged the deeds of teammate Jeff Preston, who belted two home runs to tie teammate Peter Wilson with a school-record 11 in a season.

Preston, a sophomore first baseman, hit a solo home run in the sixth inning, in which Master’s (15-31-1) scored three runs to pull to within 7-5.

In the seventh, Preston, who hit a two-run shot, and Craig Johnson hit back-to-back home runs to tie the score, 8-8.

Freshman right-hander Rick Simpson (4-2), who pitched 4 1/3 innings in relief of starter John March and yielded only three hits, earned the win. Simpson retired the final seven batters he faced.

In another baseball game:

Harbor 13, Mission 1--Mission collected only two hits and 12 batters struck out in a Southern California Athletic Conference game at Mission.

Jose Garcia from Marshall High yielded all 13 runs in six innings.

Chris Romo and Shawn Fontenot each had a hit for Mission (10-22, 8-12).

SOFTBALL

Cal State Bakersfield 3, Cal State Northridge 2--Debbie Dickmann struck out three to top the 200 mark for the season (202), but the Lady Matadors dropped their second game in pool play of the Cal State Sacramento tournament.

Bakersfield scored three unearned runs in the third after Northridge (55-17) committed consecutive errors with two out.

Char Schmitt was two for four and Jamie Berkman was two for three with an RBI to lead Northridge. Dickmann fell to 26-6.

In an earlier game, Northridge defeated Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, 5-2, behind the complete-game performance of Heather Lindstrom (19-5), who scattered eight hits while striking out two and walking none.

Berkman had two hits and Lisa Erickson collected her 100th hit of the season.
