A 49-year-old Canoga Park man was killed when his car crashed into the side of a tractor-trailer rig that was stalled across Topanga Canyon Boulevard in Chatsworth, Los Angeles police said Tuesday.

Police said James Elgin died instantly when his Volkswagen struck the trailer portion of the rig at Tulsa Street about 11:50 p.m. Monday.

Police said the tractor-trailer was being driven north on Topanga Canyon Boulevard by William Hagen, 43, of West Hills, when it had engine trouble. Hagen attempted to turn left onto Tulsa but the engine stalled and the trailer was left across the southbound lanes of the street, police said.

Hagen got out and put emergency reflectors in the southbound lanes and then got back into the truck, police said. He was attempting to start the engine when Elgin’s car, which was traveling south, struck the trailer.

An investigation of the accident is continuing, police said.
