Community College Roundup : Saddleback’s Peregrino Wins Two Titles

Ed Peregrino of Saddleback College defeated teammate Carl Hines, 6-4, 6-4, to win the singles championship of the Southern California Regional men’s tennis finals Saturday at Mt. San Antonio College in Walnut.

Peregrino later teamed with Hines to defeat teammates Jamil Atcha and Stan Sanders, 6-4, 6-2, to win the doubles championship.

Saddleback, which lost the Southern California team championship to Santa Barbara College Wednesday, avenged that loss Friday, winning the Southern California Regional with 27 points. Santa Barbara was second with 21, Orange Coast was third with 14, and Long Beach was fourth with 11.

Saddleback, the defending state champion, advances to the state tournament Friday and Saturday at West Valley College in Saratoga, Calif.

In the Southern California Regional softball second round at Palomar College:

Palomar 1, Golden West 0--With one out in the bottom of the seventh, Palomar’s Nikkie Evertz drove in catcher Lisa Ferracone for the winning run. Palomar will play host to Golden West again today at noon.

Fullerton 3, Southwestern 0--Kristin Jacobs (30-7) pitched a no-hitter and struck out five for the victory at Fullerton. Fullerton (34-10) scored all its runs in the sixth inning as Stephanie Fleischaker hit a two-run triple, and Pita Licon singled in Fleischaker for the final run. Fullerton will play host to Southwestern again today at noon.
