Four juveniles were detained and questioned Thursday after they became involved in a brawl between two rival student groups from Garfield High School, police reported.

About 60 students gathered in the parking lot of the Pizza Hut restaurant at 2832 El Cajon Blvd. at 11:30 a.m. About a dozen members of the separate groups, one mostly black and the other mostly Latino, began fighting, apparently after statements were made about clothing and colors, police spokesman Bill Robinson said.

A California Highway Patrol officer was flagged down and the officer tried to intervene when a student attempted to run over another student. The officer called for San Diego police help as the driver tried to flee, and the juvenile was caught at 30th Street and Meade Avenue.

Police do not believe the students were gang members, but they received varying accounts of the cause of the fight. All four juveniles were released to the custody of their parents, Robinson said.
