Southern Section Baseball Playoffs : 5-A Roundup : Karliner Shuts Down Beverly Hills; Ocean View Wins, 2-1

Randy Karliner disproved the notion that sophomores should neither been seen nor heard when playoff time rolls around.

The Ocean View High School left-hander pitched 3 1/3 innings of two-hit relief Friday, leading the Seahawks to a 2-1 victory in a Southern Section 5-A playoff game at Beverly Hills.

“He doesn’t play like a sophomore,” Coach Steve Barrett said. “I’ve seen him in jams all year on he’ll find a way to pitch out of it.”

After retiring the first two batters in the seventh, Karliner (9-2) allowed a single to Terry Fahn and walked Mike Glazer on four pitches. Karliner went to a full count against Jon Hamner, before inducing him to ground out to second.

In the sixth with runners on second and third, Karliner got Michael Moore to ground to third, ending the inning.

Moore, a three-sport star bound for UCLA on a football scholarship, was hitless after entering the game with a .434 average.

“I was nervous at the start, but the butterflies went away after my first inning,” Karliner said. “I was really getting into a groove the last two innings. My fastball was moving a lot. The wind was blowing from right to left and was making my pitches tail.”

Ocean View (18-9-1) scored in the third. Steve Hernandez and his brother, Daniel, opened with singles, and scored one out later when Mike Burns singled.

“I thought we’d score more runs, but we didn’t get hits at the right time,” Barrett said after his team was outhit, 8-7, and held hitless after the third. “Some of the shots we hit to left field would be out of our park, but here they were just outs.”

Bay League champion Beverly Hills (16-9) scored a run in the second off starter Brent Woken, who allowed six hits in 3 1/3 innings. Glazer led off with a single, stole second and moved to third on Chris Chandler’s grounder. Robby Welles singled to drive in Glazer.

The Seahawks, who finished third in the Sunset League, will face Angelus League champion Mater Dei, a 10-2 winner over Long Beach Wilson, Tuesday. Ocean View eliminated the Monarchs in last year’s second round and in the quarterfinals in 1985.

“This will make my year,” Barrett said. “Either they’ll be thinking that they’re jinxed or it’s time to even the score.”
