In other first-round games:

Kennedy 5, Venice 4 (11 innings)--Garret Anderson stroked an 11th-inning double to score James Campbell from second base and give the second-seeded Golden Cougars a come-from-behind win at home.

Cody Beaumaster (4-1) pitched two innings in relief of junior left-hander Denny Sharp to earn the win. Sharp struck out 13 in nine innings.

Kennedy (19-7) spotted Venice a 3-0 lead in the first inning before tying the score with a two-out, three-run rally in the third. Pat DeBoer singled to score Bruce Carreau and Gino Tagliaferri belted a two-run home run. It was Tagliaferri’s 12th home run.

Kennedy took a 4-3 lead in the sixth when Travis Bourne scored on a balk, but Venice (9-8) tied the score in the seventh.

Kennedy will play host to University in a quarterfinal game Tuesday.

Grant 6, Banning 2--Grant earned a quarterfinal match-up with Chatsworth on the strength of a five-hitter by right-hander Javier Delahoya and solo home runs by Delahoya, Sean Goldman and Stan Spancer.

Delahoya (9-0) struck out 11 and walked six. He also was two for three and scored two runs. Goldman was two for two and knocked in two runs and Manny Toledo was three for three.

Grant (16-4) scored a run in the first, then added two in the second on a run-scoring single by Jim Tumbeiro and a bases-loaded walk by Goldman.

Grant’s semifinal game will be at Chatsworth on Tuesday.

Sylmar 8, El Camino Real 4--Senior right-hander Nino Romo struck out six and added a two-run double to lead Sylmar to victory on its home field.

A three-run double by Jose Gallegos keyed a four-run Spartan rally in the second inning. Sylmar added a run in the fourth to take a 5-1 lead before El Camino Real (9-8) rallied for three runs in the fifth to cut the Spartan lead to 5-4.

Romo’s double in the sixth sparked a three-run Spartan rally to give Sylmar its winning margin. Romo (9-2) gave up eight hits and walked two.

The Spartans (18-3), winners of nine in a row, will play host to Taft in a quarterfinal game Tuesday.

Patrick Treend (4-4) suffered the loss after relieving starter Ryan McGuire in the fourth inning.

Palisades 5, Poly 3--Poly rallied for two runs in the sixth and one in the seventh but left the bases loaded in both innings at Palisades.

Senior Eddie Chavez (1-3) was tagged for four runs in four innings.

Chavez, who was one for three, was hit by a pitch in the sixth inning to force in the Parrots’ first run. Harold Whiteside added a run-scoring single.

Poly (15-7) scored in the seventh when Chavez singled in Shad Martinez.
