Mickelson Tied for Second in NCAA Golf
Phil Mickelson of Arizona State and the University of San Diego High School is tied for second with a four-under-par 66 after the first round of the NCAA Division I men’s golf championships at the Oak Tree Country Club in Edmond, Okla.
Mickelson, a freshmen, is tied with Jeff Lee (Oklahoma) and Kevin Johnson (Clemson). They trail Robert Gamez of Arizona, who shot a 62 on the 7,087-yard, par-70 East Course.
Arizona leads the team standings with a 10-under-par 270. Clemson is second, four shots behind. Arizona State is fourth at 283.
Mike Swingle of Washington and Grossmont High shot a 76, and Harry Rudolph, an Oklahoma State freshman from La Jolla High, shot 77.
SPECIAL OLYMPICS
The Greater San Diego Special Olympics Games begin at 9 a.m. Saturday with the opening ceremonies at San Diego State’s track. More than 900 athletes will compete in nine sports.
Basketball, softball, swimming and track and field will be Saturday, and bowling, floor hockey, gymnastics, soccer and volleyball will be Sunday.
