Player of the Year Matt Anderson BUENA Anderson, a left-handed pitcher who also played first base and outfield, was dominant wherever he played. The 6-foot-3, 180-pound senior batted .465, scored 25 runs and led Channel League-champion Buena with seven doubles, three triples and seven home runs. His 31 RBIs tied him for the team lead. As a pitcher, Anderson was 7-1 with an ERA of 1.50 and had five complete games. In 51 2/3 innings, he allowed only 27 hits for a county-leading ratio of .52 hits per inning. A hard thrower, he tied for the county lead with 84 strikeouts and walked only 23. Anderson signed last week with the Baltimore Orioles as a fifth-round choice in the recent amateur draft. Pitcher of the Year Mike Jenkins SIMI VALLEY Jenkins, a senior right-hander, did not lose a game in his varsity career until Simi Valley was defeated in the 5-A Division playoff quarterfinals this season. He had won 13 consecutive decisions. Jenkins (6-foot-2, 165 pounds) stepped into the role of staff ace early in the season and established himself as a dominant pitcher by striking out 15 in a win over Thousand Oaks. Jenkins, who took the mound in most of Simi Valley’s key games down the stretch, was 9-1 with an ERA of 1.93 and struck out 64 in 65 1/3 innings despite suffering from a pinched nerve in his left shoulder. He played center field when not pitching and batted .306 with six doubles and three home runs. Coach of the Year Mike Scyphers SIMI VALLEY This was a milestone season for the 36-year-old Scyphers. Early in the season, Simi Valley’s fiery, boyish-looking leader notched his 200th career victory when the Pioneers scored five runs in the seventh inning of a game against highly regarded Millikan. Scyphers’ record now stands at 221-70 in 11 seasons, an average of 20 victories a year. He directed Simi Valley to its fourth consecutive Marmonte League title this season and the team posted a county-high 23 wins against four losses despite having lost several key players to graduation. Simi Valley also won the San Mateo tournament by outscoring four opponents, 48-5. Under Scyphers, Simi Valley has qualified for the playoffs 10 times. First Team Jason Isaacs/ P BUENA 6-1,185 Jr. Isaacs, a right-hander with an overpowering fastball and a vicious knuckle-curve, was simply unbeatable. He posted a 9-0 record and allowed just six earned runs in 54 2/3 innings for an ERA of0.77. Isaacs allowed only 31 hits for a glowing ratio of .57 hits per inning and had 71 strikeouts. John Bushart/ P THOUSAND OAKS /6-4, 175/Sr. The hard-throwing left-hander pitched Thousand Oaks to a 5-A Division playoff berth. He was third in the county with 72 2/3 innings pitched and tied for the lead with 84 strikeouts. Bushart, who will attend Cal State Northridge, allowed 48 hits, posted a record of 6-3 and an ERA of 1.83. Danny Madsen/ C NEWBURY PARK/ 6-0, 190/Sr. Madsen was drafted by the Texas Rangers in the recent amateur draft but will attend Ventura College next year. He is a power hitter who batted .372, hit six home runs and set a Panther record with 36 RBIs. Madsen is also an excellent catcher with a strong arm and quick feet. Jesse Anguiano/ IF SIMI VALLEY/ 5-8, 150/ Sr. The sure-handed second baseman and leadoff batter was Simi Valley’s ignition switch. He scored a county-high 36 runs and batted .405. Anguiano also exhibited surprising power, leading the Marmonte League-champion Pioneers with five home runs and hitting seven doubles. David Frazier/ IF RIO MESA/ 5-8, 155/Jr. The Spartan second baseman was held hitless in only two games all season. He finished with a batting average of .457 with eight doubles and four home runs. Frazier, who bats left-handed, hit second in the Rio Mesa batting order and stole 15 bases and scored 29 runs. Eric Greene/ IF NEWBURY PARK/ 5-10, 165/Sr. Greene, a shortstop with exceptional range and a strong arm, was also a steady offensive performer for high-powered Newbury Park. He scored 34 runs and drove in 29 while batting .345. Greene, who will attend Fresno State, batted second in the lineup and hit five doubles and three home runs. Terry Hill/ IF SIMI VALLEY/ 5-10, 170 /Sr. In addition to being Simi Valley’s sure-handed, rifle-armed third baseman, Hill was the team’s relief pitching ace, notching a county-high six saves. Hill also batted third in the order and hit .434 with a team-leading 31 RBIs. He scored 34 runs and hit six doubles and four home runs. Andy Hodgins/ IF SIMI VALLEY/ 6-1, 185/Sr. Hodgins helped give Simi Valley the county’s best infield, playing a reliable shortstop and leading the team in hitting. He batted .459, scored 32 runs and had 38 hits. Hodgins batted second in the lineup but was not without power, hitting seven doubles and three home runs. Tom Lunsford/ IF BUENA/ 6-1 1/2, 185/Sr. Lunsford capped a three-year varsity career with his third .400-plus season, batting .431 with six home runs and 31 RBIs. Lunsford, a shortstop who has accepted a scholarship to Cal State Sacramento, possesses an excellent arm and improved dramatically on fielding ground balls. Dmitri Young/ IF RIO MESA/ 6-1, 205 /So. Young is only 15 years old, but he is the only repeat selection on the all-star team. Young, a third baseman who bats right-handed, was second in the county with a batting average of .500. Although he rarely saw a fastball, he had 28 RBIs, eight home runs, 22 stolen bases and scored 32 runs. Geoff Black/ OF NEWBURY PARK/ 6-0, 165/Sr. Black, who fields left-handed and bats right-handed, set a single-season school record with 43 hits. He also drove in 35 runs, one behind teammate Danny Madsen’s record of 36 RBIs. Black generates tremendous bat speed and he batted .435 with eight doubles and seven home runs. Chris Grodell/ OF THOUSAND OAKS/ 6-5, 175/ Sr. Grodell began the season batting ninth in the lineup but by season’s end was in the No. 3 slot. The rangy right-handed-hitting right fielder batted a team-leading .468 and scored 22 runs to help Thousand Oaks to a playoff berth. Grodell hit two home runs in a game against Simi Valley. Jason Jones/ OF ROYAL/ 5-8, 155/ Sr. Despite his small stature, Jones is a tremendous athlete who led the county with nine home runs. And he banged another one Sunday in the Ventura County All-Star game. Jones, a right-handed hitting center fielder who will attend Moorpark College, had 41 hits, batted .446 and drove in 27 runs. Brad Edmonds/ UT FILLMORE/ 6-1, 170/Sr. Edmonds was the driving force behind Fillmore advance to the 1-A Division final, pitching all four playoff games. He finished with a record of 11-3, had seven complete games and an ERA of 1.24 in a county-high 84 2/3 innings. Edmonds played shortstop when not pitching and batted .353. ALL-COUNTY SECOND TEAM
