Test Will Route Traffic One Way on Cabrillo Bridge

As part of a test of the proposed Balboa Park Master Plan, traffic on Cabrillo Bridge will only go east from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. today and Sunday.

Parking, except for the handicapped, will be prohibited in the Plaza de Panama area in front of the San Diego Museum of Art, south of the statue of El Cid.

The city Park and Recreation Department is holding the two-day experiment to evaluate a permanent change called for in the park’s master plan.

“We tested it on May 2, a free Tuesday in the park, and it worked out OK,” said Gary Stromberg of the Park and Recreation Department. “We wanted to try it on a weekend.”

The master plan, which is in the process of approval, calls for one-way traffic eastbound on the Cabrillo Bridge and for converting the Plaza de Panama to pedestrian use, Stromberg said. Also as part of the experiment, free shuttles will bus park visitors to the central core areas from the free parking lots at the Navy Hospital. The trolleys will run on a 10- to 15-minute cycle, depending on the traffic, Stromberg said.

Automobiles that enter the park via Cabrillo Bridge will exit on Presidents Way to Park Boulevard.
