Vista’s Michals Medalist in Amateur

Jerry Michals of Vista was declared the medalist of the 78th California Golf Assn. amateur championship when Gary Vanier of Pleasant Hill failed to show for a playoff after the two had tied at 141 after 36 holes.

Michals, who represents San Luis Rey Downs Golf Course, and four other San Diego-area golfers advanced to the 32-player match play portion of the tournament.

The San Diego group includes Phil Mickelson, the NCAA Division I champion, and Pat Duncan, the three-time San Diego City Amateur champion.

Mickelson rallied with a 67 at the Monterey Peninsula Country Club Tuesday after shooting a 78 in the opening round Monday. Mickelson finished with a 145, and Duncan was at 146.

Also advancing to match play, which begins today at Pebble Beach, were Keith Sbarbaro and Jack Spradlin Jr., both at 147.

Sheri Vincent of San Diego is tied with Tricia Konz of Chandler, Ariz., with a two-over 74 after the first round of the Aspen Junior Golf Classic.

TRACK AND FIELD

Jim Cerveny, the San Diego State track and field coach, said that $29,100 has been raised toward the $150,000 that will be needed to sustain the Aztec track program next season. The deadline for raising the money is Aug. 1.

The men’s and women’s track program was suspended indefinitely recently by Athletic Director Fred Miller because of a growing deficit in the athletic department.

SAILING

Major Tom of Ventura leads two boats from the San Diego Yacht Club in the San Diego-to-Honolulu Double Handed Transpac race. Major Tom, sailed by Eric Bohman and Kevin Miller, leads Adriana and Stinger.

BOWLING

Jess Stayrook of San Diego, who has never won a PBA title, advanced to today’s stepladder final by leading after six rounds of the Seattle Open.

Stayrook has 9,653 pins after 42 games and leads Dennis Horan Jr. of Santa Clara by 44 pins. The top five advanced to the final, where the winner will earn $27,000.

TENNIS

Noelle Porter and Laura Richards advanced to today’s final of the Great American Bank Opportunity Tournament at 5 p.m. at the San Diego Tennis and Racquet Club. The winner qualifies for the qualifying round of the Great American Bank Tennis Classic.
