The Jewish Federation of Greater Long Beach and West Orange County raised more than $41,000 during a benefit performance Saturday night, kicking off a campaign to raise $113,000 locally for Soviet Jews seeking to emigrate.

Nationally, Jewish organizations hope to raise $75 million this year to help about 40,000 Jewish emigres resettle in the United States and Israel, said Judy Deutsch, of the local Jewish Federation chapter. The money will go toward their transportation, medical costs, occupational training and other expenses, Deutsch said.

About 720 people attended the Saturday night “Passage to Freedom Concert for Soviet Jews,” which featured stage and screen actor Theodore Bikel at the Elks lodge.
