Cerritos Contracting Firm Wins Award for Restoration of Historical House
A general contracting firm has been awarded the 1989 restoration merit award in the California Preservation Foundation’s design awards competition.
J. C. Hammond Construction Co. was recognized for craftsmanship and “excellent attention to detail” for its work on the historical Stowell house in Pasadena. A jury of architects, landscape architects, preservation officials and an editor chose the firm.
Hammond crews worked for two years on the Stowell house, a 94-year-old heritage home purchased for a dollar and spared from the wrecking ball in 1987 when it was moved from the path of a condominium development.
Authentic Victorian light fixtures and original hardware and period-style decoration now adorn the home.
The company received the 1986 Long Beach Beautification Award for relocation and restoration of a 3,800-square-foot Queen Anne Victorian, cited as that year’s finest improvement project.
