Bobby Hughes of the North Pole Nicks, a baseball team from Fairbanks in the Alaskan Collegiate League, suffered a severe laceration on his right middle finger in a bicycle accident Sunday. The injury required 80 stitches.

Hughes, a Times All-Valley selection for Notre Dame High this past season, also broke the finger in the accident that occurred when the bike he was riding fell on his finger as he crashed on gravel.

Although Hughes--who is right-handed--is expected to be out for three weeks, the injury is not career threatening.

“I was really worried about my future when it first happened,” said Hughes, who has signed a letter of intent with Loyola Marymount. “But the doctor said I should be fine.”

Hughes batted .400 and drove in 38 runs for Notre Dame (25-6) in 1989.

The Los Angeles Breakers won their third consecutive gold medal in the fourth National Dwarf Games last weekend in Baltimore.

Scott Danberg scored 17 points to lead the Breakers to a 73-6 rout of the Atlanta Coasters in the semifinals, then scored 14 in a 38-22, championship-game win over the Steamers, a team made up of East Coast players.

Four members of the Breakers also combined to win the 400-meter relay for the second year in a row. Danberg, Joseph Griffo, David Myers and Michael Gilden won the gold in 1 minute, 6.5 seconds, one-tenth of a second off their winning time of a year ago.

The National Dwarf Games are staged by the Dwarf Athletic Assn. of America.
