Homeowners in Los Lomas, a Poway estate community, learned this week that a traffic study has confirmed that a planned major road through the middle of their suburban valley is not needed to serve a developing industrial park to the south.

The 19 property owners who have built or are building $500,000 homes along Gate Drive learned last year that their cul-de-sac was on the route for a proposed four-lane arterial street--Midland Road--linking Poway Road with a new east-west highway in the 2,000-acre industrial park.

Los Lomas residents had appealed to the Poway City Council to reroute Midland Road around their residential enclave or to remove the route from planning maps.

Poway City Manager Jim Bowersox said Friday that removing the Midland Road extension through Los Lomas would have “only a negligible effect” on traffic circulation in the industrial park and could be dropped.

A major landowner in the industrial area, Parkway Partners, had pledged to pay the estimated $1.5 million needed to build the Midland Road extension.

Bowersox said the City Council is expected Tuesday to follow the city staff recommendation to delete the road extension from the city’s community plan.
