The Navy has awarded a five-year, $62.2-million contract to the San Diego Community College District to provide technical training at the Great Lakes Naval Training Center in Chicago, officials said.
Under the program, which begins Oct. 1, the district will train about 19,000 Navy personnel annually in areas including electronics, propulsion engineering, diesel engines and weapons maintenance, said John P. Leahy, dean of military education for the district.
The program uses civilian instructors from the district to provide technical training after boot camp, Leahy said. The district’s military contracts now will total $30 million annually, with the Chicago pact being the largest, Leahy said.
The district’s military training will now involve 64,000 Navy personnel in five states.
