Spradlin Wins Opener in Trans-Miss

Medalist Jack Spradlin of San Diego defeated David Bianchi of Lancaster, 4 and 3, Thursday in the opening round of match play in the Trans-Mississippi Golf Championship at the La Jolla Country Club.

Ron Richard, the 1987 champion, eliminated Steve Wilson of Rancho Santa Fe, 5 and 4. John Pigg, the 1984 winner from Austin Tex., advanced by defeating John Bridges of Irvine, 3 and 1.

San Diego’s Ferd Fletcher was eliminated by Randy Sonnier of Woodlands, Tex., 5 and 4.

Two rounds of match play will begin today at 7:30 a.m. The quarterfinals and semifinals are scheduled Saturday and the 18-hole championship match Sunday.

SYNCHRONIZED SWIMMING

San Diego’s Laurie McClelland was the Sweetwater Dolphins’ top performer in the solo and duet semifinals at the Junior National Outdoor Synchronized Swimming Championships at the Allied Gardens city pool.

McClelland qualified for the finals in both events, which begin Sunday at 9:15 a.m. The top 10 routines advanced. The first-place solo qualifier was Kari Kreitzer (89.000), who swims for the Santa Clara Aquamaids. McClelland placed fourth with an 87.600.

In duets, McClelland paired with Megan Egoscue (85.680) for a sixth-place finish. Top qualifiers were Nicole Banks and Dana Hunsinger of the Walnut Creek Aquanauts with an 88.680. Trio and team semifinals begin today at 8:15 a.m. at Allied Gardens.

FOOTBALL

Chargers quarterback David Archer received a 10-day suspended jail sentence after pleading no contest to a charge of drunken driving, according to Gwinnett County, Ga., court records.

Archer also was fined $400 by Recorder’s Court Chief Judge Robert Rodatus, was assessed a $40 court fee and ordered to attend DUI traffic school.

Archer, 27, was charged with driving under the influence after being stopped early June 30. He was released from the county jail later that day after posting a $1,050 bond, according to records.

Archer, who formerly played for the Atlanta Falcons, was signed by the Chargers in the off-season, lives in Norcross, a northeast suburb of Atlanta.
