Share

The first official striped marlin of Southern California’s 1989 marlin season was taken Friday afternoon about 10 miles off the east end of Santa Catalina Island.

Dave Denholm reportedly caught the first marlin June 30, but because his fish was tagged and released, it won’t be considered the the season’s official first.

John Reichmuth of Santa Clara, fishing aboard the Bongos out of Davey’s Locker in Newport Beach, caught his fish--estimated by skipper Joe Bairein to weigh between 100 and 130 pounds--at the 277-fathom spot and was en route to Balboa Angling Club to have the fish officially weighed.
