And Mincher Wasn’t ‘Finished’ in ’68
Ross Newhan’s commentary on the tragic death of Donnie Moore states that Don Mincher’s career was “finished” when he was beaned in April 1968.
Yet, he played in 120 games that year. In 1969, he played in 140 games and tied his previous best with 25 home runs. In 1970, he played in 140 games and hit 27 home runs, best in his career. In 1971, he played in 128 games and had a career-high .280 batting average.
It may have made the article more dramatic, but calling Mincher’s career “finished” was at least a slight exaggeration.
