Tennis Roundup : Gilbert Rallies to Win, Plays Mayotte for Title

Top-seeded Tim Mayotte, yielding only 10 points on his serve, advanced to the final of the Sovran Bank tournament Saturday in Washington with a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Todd Witsken.

Mayotte blasted five aces and never faced a break point in eliminating Witsken in 71 minutes.

In the other semifinal, Brad Gilbert rallied from 0-2 in the final set for a 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 win over Richey Reneberg.

Martin Jaite of Argentina defeated Jens Woehrmann of West Germany, 5-7, 6-4, 6-3, to advance to the final of a Grand Prix tournament at Stuttgart, West Germany.

Jaite will play Goran Prpic of Yugoslavia, who beat Sergio Bruguera of Spain, 3-6, 7-5, 6-1, in the other semifinal.

Top-seeded Katerina Maleeva of Bulgaria and unseeded qualifier Sabine Hack of West Germany reached the final of the Volvo Ladies International in Bastad, Sweden.

Maleeva, ranked 15th in the world, battled for almost 2 hours before beating fourth-seeded Sandra Cecchini of Italy, 6-4, 2-6, 6-4. Hack defeated Sweden’s Maria Strandlund, 6-2, 6-3.

This is the first major final for the 19-year-old Hack, who is ranked 105th in the world.

John McEnroe will be missing because of a shoulder strain Monday when play begins in the Volvo International at Stratton Mountain, Vt.

Boris Becker, the recent winner at Wimbledon, withdrew earlier because of a leg muscle strain.
