One man was seriously injured and another was charged with drunk driving as the result of the crash early Tuesday of their four-wheel drive vehicle into a large construction dumpster beside Pacific Coast Highway in Newport Beach, police said.

Ron Henson, 28, of Arcata, was trapped in the 2 a.m. wreck, and emergency crews had to use a hydraulic prying device to free him, said Newport Beach police spokesman Robert Oakley. Henson was taken by helicopter to United Western Medical Center-Santa Ana, where he underwent surgery Tuesday afternoon.

His condition was not immediately known.

The driver of the vehicle, James Andrew Svetz, 25, of Newport Beach, was charged with drunk driving and was released on his own recognizance, Oakley said.
