Ashford, Nehemiah, Three Other Americans Post Victories in Italy

Evelyn Ashford, Renaldo Nehemiah and three other Americans posted victories in the City of Viareggio track and field meet Wednesday night.

Nehemiah took the men’s 110-meter hurdles in 13.55 seconds.

Ashford, who taught some young Italian athletes her training methods before the race, won the women’s 100-meter dash in 11.46 seconds. She edged Diane Williams, who was timed in 11.77 seconds.

Other U.S. winners were Danny Harris in the 400-meter hurdles, Thomas Jefferson in the men’s 200-meter and Joe Greene in the men’s long jump.

Harris, who ended the winning streak of Edwin Moses last year, won his race in 49.84 seconds. Jefferson was timed in 21.14 seconds, and Greene jumped 25 feet 3 1/4 inches.

British veteran Sebastian Coe, outsprinted Moussa Fall of Senegal to win the 800 meters in 1:46.04.
