All-Star Outcome Decided by Kicking : Trakas’ 3 Field Goals, Robinson Return Highlights of 24-9 San Diego Victory

For the second consecutive year, the kicking game was a deciding factor in the Hall of Champions College Prep All-Star Football Game.

Patrick Henry’s Andy Trakas made three of three field goal attempts, Eric Robinson returned a punt 83 yards for a touchdown and Raymond Thompson’s fumble recovery on a punt return led to another score as the San Diego County team defeated Los Angeles, 24-9, Saturday night in front of 5,125 fans at Torrey Pines High School.

San Diego County now has won three years in a row. Last year, Fallbrook’s Tim Walker kicked a 39-yard field goal with eight seconds remaining in a 17-14 victory.

Saturday night, it appeared as though Trakas, The Times’ all-section kicker, would be the lone scorer.

San Diego got the board with eight minutes 56 seconds left in the first quarter on a 38-yard field goal by Trakas, who will report today with other freshmen at San Diego State. A 42-yard pass from quarterback Cree Morris to Jake Nyberg on the first play of the drive was the key. Morris and Nyberg, both from Orange Glen High, are also headed to SDSU.

On the fourth play of the second quarter, San Diego’s James Loftis (Fallbrook) sacked Dorsey quarterback Roman Foster in the end zone for a safety and a 5-0 San Diego lead. It was San Diego’s third sack; Crawford’s Thompson had two for minus 13 yards on the first series.

Trakas’ second field goal, a 29-yarder midway through the second quarter, made it 8-0.

Trakas’ third, from 44 yards out with 3:29 left in the half, gave San Diego an 11-0 halftime lead.

San Diego dominated the first-half statistics, gaining 211 total yards to Los Angeles’ 105.

Morris completed just three passes, but they went for 42 yards to Nyberg, 21 to El Camino’s Eric Robinson and 41 to Southwest’s Will Tate, giving Morris 104 yards in the first quarter. Torrey Pines’ John Lynch was not as effective, but three of his passes were dropped by receivers. Lynch finished with three completions in 10 attempts for 30 yards.

Lincoln’s Orlanzo Edwards provided most of the running game in the first half with one carry, 36 yards. Edwards slipped through a big hole on the right side of the line, then made a move to the left sideline and avoided two Los Angeles’ defenders before stepping out of bounds at the 30. Four plays later, Trakas kicked his third field goal.

Aside from two plays--a 43-yard run by Wilson Bryant (Dorsey) and a 29-yard reception from Foster by Banning’s Johnny Lawrence--Los Angeles did very little right on offense in the first half. Foster was two of seven for 38 yards and one interception (by Kearny’s Mark Hood). Kennedy’s Tony Smets completed just one of three for 10 yards. He too, was intercepted, by El Camino’s Sylvester Jones.

In the half, Los Angeles gave up two interceptions, committed six penalties for minus 67 yards and allowed three sacks for minus 15 yards.

In the second half, the game turned sloppy, marred by mistakes and penalties. Los Angeles avoided a shutout with a safety in the third quarter. San Diego’s snap on a punt attempt sailed into and out of the end zone.

El Camino’s Robinson provided some excitement with the 83-yard punt return midway through the fourth quarter.

Lynch scored on a four-yard keeper late in the fourth quarter to end the scoring for San Diego.
