San Diego Wins Division II Title in Basketball

Most valuable player Clark James led San Diego High to its second consecutive Division II championship in the Police Athletic League Summer High School League Friday at Municipal Gym.

Clark had 18 points, seven steals and six blocks to lead the Cavers over Kearny, 68-65.

In the Division I championship, Mira Mesa defeated University City, 79-67, to complete an undefeated season. The Marauder’s Kal Chatham had 12 points, 12 rebounds, 10 assists and eight steals, and J.J. Rowlett had a game-high 21 points.

TENNIS

The top four seeded players won quarterfinal singles matches in the USTA Boys’ 12s national tournament at Morley Field. No. 1 Ryan Wolters of San Jose and No. 3 Matthew Wright of Wichita, Kan., won in straight sets. No. 2 Blake McMeans of Knoxville, Tenn., and No. 4 Justin Gimelstob of Eastern Falls, N.J., were extended to three sets in advancing to today’s semifinals.

Marisa Velasco of Chula Vista was defeated by Cristina Moros of Sarasota, Fla., 6-1, 6-1, in the USTA Girls’ 12s national tournament semifinals in Boca Raton, Fla.

DIVING

Kristen Walls, a section champion diver while at Monte Vista High School, finished third in the 16-18-year-old one-meter event at the Junior Olympic national championships at The Woodlands, Tex. Walls, who will attend UCLA this fall, scored 378.90 points to 399.60 by Vanessa Bergman of Stanford.

BASEBALL

The Angels used a four-run third inning to break open a tie game and then coasted to a 13-4 victory over the Mets to win the championship of the San Diego Collegiate Baseball League at San Diego State. Ryan Love was two for five with two doubles and four RBIs. Mike Raskind pitched a five-hitter, allowing just one earned run.

An SDCBL all-star team will meet an all-star team from Phoenix in a doubleheader today at 5 p.m. and Sunday in a single game at 2 p.m. at SDSU.

Tommy Mitchell hit a bases-empty homer as San Diego broke a tie and went on to beat Jackson, Miss., 11-8, in a fourth-round game of the National Baseball Congress World Series in Wichita, Kan.
