Surgery to Put Lindsay Out for Six Weeks

Thousand Oaks High tailback Mike Lindsay is scheduled to undergo arthroscopic knee surgery this week and will miss at least six weeks, Coach Bob Richards said Saturday.

The senior back rushed for 1,046 yards in 190 carries and scored six touchdowns last season.

He first injured the knee June 21 while kicking a soccer ball. He participated in the Lancers’ summer passing-league games without pain but last week reinjured the knee while making a cut.

“We should have him back for the second or third league game,” Richards said. “We’ve never had a tailback in better shape than Mike is in now, so his rehabilitation will probably be shorter than normal.”

Junior Greg Buchanan (5-foot-9, 160 pounds), the league frosh-soph 100-meter champion, and sophomore Cory Bowen (5-7, 150) will get first crack at replacing Lindsay. Safety Steve Rudisill, the Marmonte League Defensive Player of the Year last season, and Jim Magallanes, an all-league cornerback, may also see action at tailback.

“Rudisill and Magallanes are key defensive players, perhaps the best we’ve ever had at their positions, so I’d rather they didn’t take a beating at tailback,” Richards said. “They will play in spots.

“Everybody will just have to share a little more of the burden.”

Francisco Flores hit a three-run home run and Kevin Deitch added a two-run homer to lead Encino to an 8-1 victory over host Washington, Pa., Saturday in the first round of the Pony League World Series.

Encino (15-2) will play Orland Park, Ill., today for a berth in the semifinals of the eight-team tournament.

Against Washington, Glen Carson added a solo homer and a double. Three of Encino’s four hits were home runs. Right-hander Chris Ferebee (8-0) gave up one run and six hits and struck out nine in five innings for the victory.

Dave Milstien, an infielder for the New Britain Red Sox of the double-A Eastern League, has been selected to a team that will stage an 18-day tour of the Soviet Union.

The team of Eastern League players will play intra-squad games and offer instructional clinics in and around Moscow. The tour runs Sept. 22-Oct. 10.

Milstien, a former Simi Valley High player, is batting .245 for the Red Sox in his fourth year in the minors. He has 21 runs batted in and five steals and had an 11-game hitting streak end Wednesday.

Jason Stelle had six goals in two games for Agoura High in the first two rounds of the Harvard Cup water polo tournament Saturday at Harvard High.

After Agoura lost its first game to Harvard A, 14-4, the Chargers rallied for a 22-9 victory over Glendale in their second game.

Led by Damon Willick with nine goals, Harvard B defeated Ross Sterling of Houston, 10-8, and Crespi, 14-10.

Ryan Crosbie was Harvard A’s leading scorer with four goals in three games. Harvard A’s victory over Agoura was its only win in three games.

The six-team tournament concludes today.
