Steve Stipanovich, center for the Indiana Pacers, will retire because of an injured left knee that forced him to miss all of last season, the Indianapolis Star reported.
An official announcement could come early next week, after Stipanovich meets with General Manager Donnie Walsh and other team officials. Neither Stipanovich nor the Pacers would confirm or deny the report.
Stipanovich, the Pacers’ top draft pick and the second selection overall in the 1983 NBA draft, averaged 13.2 points and 7.8 rebounds and started 403 of 410 games before missing all of the last season.
