If Pete Rose had answered gambling charges before baseball Commissioner Bart Giamatti, federal investigators could have used his testimony against him, the Dayton Daily News reported.
Another report said the FBI has dropped its investigation of Rose.
Giamatti banned the Cincinnati Red manager from the game for life Thursday, noting that Rose had refused to attend a hearing on charges he had bet on baseball.
Transcripts of such a hearing could have been used in the drug-trafficking and tax evasion trial of Rose’s former housemate, Thomas Gioiosa, the newspaper said.
The Cleveland Plain Dealer reported the FBI has concluded a gambling and drug investigation of the former Reds manager and does not intend to file criminal charges.
