THE SIDELINES : TENNIS : Lendl, Edberg, Sabatini Win

Ivan Lendl, Stefan Edberg and Gabriela Sabatini all cruised into the third round of the U.S. Open tennis championships today to restore some semblance of order to the seedings.

Lendl, the U.S.-based Czechoslovak seeded No. 1, demolished Australian John Fitzgerald 6-2, 6-1, 6-1. Sabatini, seeded third, worked her topspin magic on stadium court to a 6-3, 6-2 victory over 75th-ranked Italian Cathy Caverzasio. Third seed Edberg defeated 47th-ranked fellow-Swede Peter Lundgren 6-2, 6-2, 6-2.

There was one minor upset when hard-hitting 26th-ranked Austrian Barbara Paulus rallied to defeat 11th-seeded Jana Novotna of Czechoslovakia 3-6, 6-3, 6-2. French Open champion Arantxa Sanchez-Vicario of Spain, seeded sixth, posted a 6-1, 6-3 win over American Cammy MacGregor. Larisa Savchenko of the Soviet Union eliminated Nicole Jagerman of the Netherlands 1-6, 7-5, 6-1.

Also in the second round, American Susan Sloane defeated Manon Bollegraf of the Netherlands 6-4, 6-2, and 15th seed Conchita Martinez of Spain beat Sophie Amiach of France 6-3, 6-4.

In other second-round play, ninth-seeded Tim Mayotte of the United States beat Christo van Rensburg of South Africa 6-2, 6-2, 7-6 (7-3); American Jim Grabb beat Goran Ivanisevic of Yugoslavia 6-1, 6-3, 6-2; Andres Gomez of Ecuador beat Danie Visser of South Africa 3-6, 6-3, 6-4, 6-4 and American Jim Courier beat countryman Jared Palmer 6-1, 6-3, 6-3. Eighth-seed Helena Sukova of Czechoslovakia defeated American Gretchen Magers 6-2, 6-7 (3-7), 6-2, and Terry Phelps beat fellow American Robin White 1-6, 6-4, 6-3.
