A 6-year old girl was killed Saturday afternoon in Sunland and a second child was injured when the bicycle they were riding was struck by a car, Los Angeles police said.

Danielle Burchett of Lancaster was thrown off the handlebars of the bicycle after it rolled through a stop sign and was struck by the car just after 1 p.m., said Officer Tim Cox.

She was taken to Pacifica Hospital of the Valley in Sun Valley and was pronounced dead at 2:35 p.m., Cox said.

Nicole Luttrell, 8, of Sunland was airlifted to Childrens Hospital of Los Angeles, where a spokeswoman said her condition was stable.

Police said the driver of the car, Charlotte Vlicks, 47, of La Crescenta, was not at fault and was not cited.

The two girls were riding north on Quill Avenue and Vlicks was driving east on Apperson Street when the bicycle went through the stop sign and was hit by the car, police said.

Cox said the Luttrell girl rolled under the car. Vlicks, seeing the Burchett child thrown through the air, began to park the car to go to her aid, accidentally running over the other girl.
