Roundup : Ciborowski Leads Edison to 14-12 Water Polo Victory

Junior Chris Ciborowski’s three goals in the fourth quarter helped Edison High School to a 14-12 victory over Millikan Tuesday in a nonleague water polo match at Millikan.

Millikan led, 10-9, to start the final quarter, but Edison outscored the Rams, 5-1. Brian Melstrom scored four goals to lead Edison.

Millikan, ranked No. 10 in the Southern Section 4-A, defeated Edison, an unranked 3-A team, in a summer tournament match about a month ago.

“We have come a long way in the month since we played,” Edison Coach Matt Whitmore said. “We certainly surprised them.”

In other nonleague water polo:

Servite 9, Laguna Beach 2--Golie Tom Cambell had 17 saves and Chris Krpan scored four goals to lead the Friars. Host Servite led, 7-1, at the half.

Tustin 10, Fullerton 6--Sophomore Jeremy Yorba scored four goals, and Jim Smith and Mike deLancellotti had two each for host Tustin in the season-opener for both teams. Fullerton scored the first goal, but Tustin led, 4-1, at the end of the first quarter and 7-3 at halftime.

Saddleback 24, Santiago 0--Chris Buerger had five goals and Derek McCord and Don Vu four each for host Saddleback (3-2). Saddleback led, 6-0, after one quarter, 13-0 at the half, and 21-0 after three quarters. Goalie Majid Ahmadi had 10 saves for Saddleback. Santiago is 0-1.

Los Alamitos 10, Sonora 9 (OT)--Brian Granger broke a 9-9 tie with a goal in the final 30 seconds of overtime for visiting Los Alamitos. Bryan Liff and and Dustin Macdonald scored three goals each for Los Alamitos.

In nonleague girls’ tennis:

Corona del Mar 14, Foothill 4--The Sea Kings won their first match easily, despite playing without Keri Phebus, last season’s Sea View League champion. Coach Gary Salazar said he held out Phebus and some other top players to give others experience.

Juniors Kristen Pollock and Jackie O’Leary won their three doubles sets, and junior Christie McClintock swept her singles matches.

Orange 14, Orange Lutheran 4--Orange’s doubles teams swept their sets to lead the host Panthers. Tu Mai Tran and Palmerin Perez won, 6-4, 6-1, 6-3; Tram Le and Cori Matra won, 6-3, 7-5, 6-3, and Michelle Fisher and Jennifer Ressler won, 6-2, 6-1, 6-1.

University 12, Marina 6--Sophomore Jeannette Fylpaa won, 6-4, 6-1, 6-0, to lead visiting University (3-0). Marina is 1-2.

Dana Hills 13, Fountain Valley 5--Kelly Lynch won, 6-3, 6-1, 6-0, for visiting Dana Hills. Dana Hills also had two doubles teams sweep their sets. Heather Bolton and Shauna Brozek won, 6-3, 6-4, 6-2, and Susan Walti and Christine Orcutt won, 6-4, 6-0, 6-1.

In nonleague girls’ volleyball:

Corona del Mar 3, Irvine 0--Senior Danielle Everett had 16 kills and junior Tracy Schriber had 12 as the Sea Kings swept, 15-6, 15-8, 15-13. It was the season opener for both teams.

“I thought we played pretty well for our first game,” Corona del Mar Coach Charlie Brande said.

La Quinta 3, Costa Mesa 1--Senior middle blocker Nichole Huss had eight kills as La Quinta won at Costa Mesa, 15-4, 2-15, 15-12, 15-5.

Newport Harbor 3, Huntington Beach 0--Sophomore Maureen McLaren had 10 kills and senior Anjanette Gan had eight as the Sailors won at home, 15-6, 15-7, 15-12.

Newport Harbor Coach Dan Glenn said it was a good way to start the season, but added that none of his questions were answered. “I didn’t know what to expect,” he said. “I still don’t know where we’re at.”

Orange 3, Savanna 2--Senior Angela Darraugh had 13 kills and six blocks as Orange came back from a two-game deficit to win at home, 9-15, 3-15, 15-12, 15-8, 15-8.

“After losing the second game, it didn’t appear real hopeful,” Orange Coach Dan Brady said. “But we played really well the last three games.”

Magnolia 3, Troy 0--Esther Arbiso had 15 kills to lead visiting Magnolia to a 15-7, 15-4, 15-12 sweep. Jill Schneider had 11 kills, three blocks and nine digs for Magnolia (2-0).

Edison 3, Estancia 0--Briana Winter had six kills and six digs as Edison defeated Estancia, 15-2, 15-4, 15-8, at home in the season-opener for both teams.

Mater Dei 3, Santa Margarita 2--Kim Brown had nine kills and nine blocks to lead host Mater Dei to a 12-15, 11-15, 15-9, 15-12, 15-9 victory. It was the season opener for both teams.

Laguna Beach 3, Fountain Valley 0--Sara Nelson had 17 kills as host Laguna Beach won, 15-9, 15-7, 16-14. Kealy Clarke had 15 kills and five blocks for Laguna Beach.

Anaheim 3, Connelly 0--The host Colonists swept, 15-5, 15-10, 15-8.

El Modena 3, Fullerton 1--Heather McKinley had 19 kills and 12 aces as El Modena rallied for a 10-15, 16-14, 15-3, 15-4 victory at home. Marni Hichborn had 12 kills and 10 blocks for El Modena.

Orange Lutheran 3, Santiago 0--Host Orange Lutheran won its season opener, 15-7, 15-2, 13-15, 15-3. Santiago is 1-1.
