Madison Rally Too Much for San Clemente
The San Clemente High School football team outplayed visiting San Diego Madison for three quarters, but was itself outplayed in the fourth and ended up on the short end of a 20-10 score in front of about 1,000 Friday night.
The Tritons (0-2) were in front, 10-6, at the half, but after a scoreless third quarter, they gave up two touchdowns to the Warhawks (1-1).
On the first play of the quarter, quarterback Mike Jones passed 32 yards to James Cole for a 13-10 lead. The play completed a 61-yard, five-play drive.
The Warhawks put the game out of reach with a 26-yard touchdown run by fullback Bryant Craig with 1:21 remaining.
Madison scored first on Cole’s 60-yard interception return of a Mario Watkins pass midway through the first quarter. The conversion try failed and Madison led, 6-0.
Then it was all San Clemente until halftime. Triton fullback Larry Brophy tied the game on the next play from scrimmage, scoring on an 80-yard run up the middle. A successful conversion gave San Clemente a 7-6 lead. Derek Marshall’s 39-yard field goal gave the Tritons a 10-7 lead at the intermission.
