Today’s Football Games : Greene Carries the Offense for Orange Lutheran

Share

Tailback Gil Greene, the leading prep rusher in Orange County with 258 yards in his first game, will lead Orange Lutheran High School against Aquinas in a nonleague game at 2 today in Orange.

Greene averaged 13.6 yards per carry and scored three touchdowns in Lutheran’s season-opening 26-12 victory over Pater Noster.

“We’re starting a sophomore quarterback, so if we’re going to be successful, Gil is going to have to carry 20-25 times a game,” Orange Lutheran Coach Bob Dowding said. “He’s going to be our big man this year.

“Against Pater Noster, he went outside for yardage, and he also ran over some defenders. The offensive line did a good job blocking for him. (Guard) David Hooper had an excellent game and did a great job pulling on the sweeps. “

Greene gained 800 yards last year, and Dowding estimated he gained most of the yards when Orange Lutheran began Olympic League play.

“Gil was a little tentative at the beginning of the year, but he was a different player in the second half of the season,” Dowding said.

Aquinas is coming off a 14-13 loss to Rim of the World.

Tonight, Laguna Beach will try for its first victory of the year when it travels to Riverside City College to meet Norte Vista at 7:30.
