San Diego Sports et Cetera : Aztec Split End Raye Injures His Foot; Status Uncertain

San Diego State split end Jimmy Raye sprained his right foot in practice Wednesday, and his status for Saturday night’s football game against Cal State Fullerton at San Diego Jack Murphy is uncertain, a school spokesman said Thursday.

Raye’s foot has been placed in a cast, and he will be examined further today. If he is unable to play, he will be replaced in the starting lineup by senior Robert Claiborne. Raye, despite the injury, will continue to hold on placements.

Raye, a 5-foot-8, 160-pound junior, is second on the team with 11 catches for 162 yards.

MEN’S SOCCER

Cal Lutheran (3-2) defeated Point Loma Nazarene, 2-1, in overtime in a nonleague game at Point Loma. Mike Friesen scored 35 minutes into the first half, giving Point Loma Nazarene (2-2-3) a 1-0 lead at halftime.

In the second half, Cal Lutheran’s Larry Kidley tied the score with a penalty kick and Jeff Dietrich scored the game-winner off a cornerkick.

MEN’S GOLF

San Diego’s Joe Simpson won two matches to advance to the quarterfinals of the U.S. Senior Amateur Championship at the Lochinvar Golf Club in Houston.

Simpson, the only remaining semifinalist from last year’s tournament, defeated Don Matheson of Ft. Worth, Tex., 2 and 1, and Dean Cassell of Charlotte, N.C., 4 and 3. Simpson will play Warren Jones of San Mateo today.
