Steve Pate, Two Others Shoot 64s

Steve Pate, Billy Andrade and Rick Fehr each shot a six-under-par 64 Thursday for a share of the lead in the first round of the $400,000 Southern Open golf tournament at Green Island Country Club.

One shot back were Kenny Knox and Ray Barr Jr., while defending champion David Frost was at 70. The field is missing 12 of the top American players who are competing in the Ryder Cup.
