THE SIDELINES : Women’s Sports Group to Honor 4
Tennis star Evonne Goolagong-Cawley, softball pitcher Joan Joyce, basketball player Theresa Weld Blanchard and fencing champion Ilona Schacherer-Elek have been named to the International Women’s Sports Hall of Fame by the Women’s Sports Foundation, foundation President Carol Mann said today.
Goolagong-Cawley was a four-time Australian Open tennis champion. Joyce had a career amateur record of 507-33 with 105 no-hitters. Blanchard was a three-time AAU All-American basketball player and Schacherer-Elek, of Hungary, won the 1934 and ’35 world fencing championships.
Inductions will be Oct. 3 in New York. Blanchard and Schacherer-Elek will be honored posthumously.
