Rio Mesa 44, Hueneme 6--Sal Balsano scored on a 45-yard run on the third play from scrimmage to ignite the Spartans in a league opener at home.
Balsano rushed for 83 yards in 11 carries and scored two more touchdowns and a two-point conversion as Rio Mesa gained 314 yards on the ground. Gordy Abellera had 87 yards in 11 carries for Rio Mesa (3-1), and fullback Scott O’Neill added touchdowns on runs of one and two yards.
Rio Mesa quarterback Henry Wilson completed three of eight attempts for 67 yards, and the defense limited Hueneme to 79 yards rushing.
