Golf Roundup : Azinger Shoots 62, Leads by Three as Wadkins Falters in Texas Open

Paul Azinger shot an eight-under-par 62 Friday and took a three-stroke lead over Donnie Hammond at the halfway point of the Texas Open golf tournament in San Antonio.

Bidding for his second victory of the year, Azinger overtook faltering Lanny Wadkins on the closing holes to finish two trips around Oak Hills Country Club at 14-under-par 126.

Wadkins, a co-leader after the first round, stayed on top for most of the hot, windless afternoon but tumbled back into the pack with a double bogey on the 17th hole. He limped in with a 68 and was tied with six others at 130.

Wadkins’ problems permitted Hammond, with a 64, to slip into second place at 129.

Hammond’s bogey-free round gave him a one-shot edge over seven golfers, including first-round co-leader Mark Wiebe, who had a 68 after Thursday’s record-tying 62.

Gary Player, sparked by a six-under-par 29 on the front side, shot a 65 to take a two-stroke lead in the first round of the RJR Championship for seniors at Clemmons, N.C.

Longshots Paul Moran and Quinton Gray shared second place at 67.

Arnold Palmer had a 76; Bob Charles, the Senior PGA Tour money leader, shot a 73, and Orville Moody was at 71.
