Southern Section Roundup : NONLEAGUE

La Canada 9, Hoover 0--Ross Allan’s school-record 49-yard field goal in the second quarter--his first of three field goals--was all La Canada (4-1) needed for the victory at home. Allan, who set the previous record of 44 yards last week against Harvard, also had kicks of 25 and 21 yards.

Hoover never managed to jump-start its option offense, generating only 132 yards in offense. Hoover (2-3) was playing without running back Stanley Baires--sidelined because of a dislocated shoulder--who has been averaging 56 yards rushing a game.

Trailing, 6-0, Hoover had its best chance to score on the first play of the fourth quarter when running back Mark Garza took a pitch at the Hoover 49 and did a tight-rope act down the left sideline to the La Canada 22. Four unsuccessful Hoover plays later, La Canada took over on downs. Garza finished with 57 yards in eight carries.
