Bishop Calls for Quake Donations
Bishop Leo T. Maher of the Catholic Diocese of San Diego is urging everyone in the county to give money to help survivors of the Bay Area quake.
“The trauma that has affected so many people in the earthquake area is beyond our comprehension as those persons assess and cope with the loss of life, the injuries and the damage to homes and facilities,” Maher said. “I urge all of us to contribute as generously as we can to help our brothers and sisters recover from this natural disaster inflicted on them.”
Cash donations, collected by the Bishop’s Office of the Diocese of San Diego and Catholic Charities, may be designated for specific areas of help, a Diocese spokesman said.
Money donated to the diocese will go to the archbishop of San Francisco and the bishops of Oakland, San Jose and Monterey to distribute.
Money given to the charity agency will be disbursed to Catholic Charities in San Francisco, Oakland, San Jose and Monterey, for emergency relief and counseling services, medical assistance and to aid the homeless.
Checks sent to the Diocese of San Diego should be marked “Earthquake Relief” and mailed to P.O. Box 80428, San Diego 92138. Checks for Catholic Charities should be addressed to Catholic Charities, 349 Cedar St., San Diego 92101.
