CITY SECTION ROUNDUP : Chatsworth Turns Taft Fumbles Into Win

Chatsworth High turned two Taft fumbles into quick touchdowns and came away with a 13-7 upset over the Toreadors in a Northwest Valley Conference game Friday night at Taft.

Chatsworth running back Kenny Smith opened the scoring with a 10-yard run with 22 seconds remaining in the first half, three plays after the Toreadors fumbled a punt inside their 20. Smith carried 22 times for 79 yards.

Chatsworth tailback Kyle Beck had a game-high 90 yards in eight carries, including a 53-yard scamper with 2:33 to play in the third quarter immediately after Taft running back Irving Carter’s fumble.

Taft’s only score came with eight minutes to play on a one-yard plunge by tailback Vance Swindell.

Chatsworth (2-2-1 overall, 2-1 in league play) had 146 yards rushing and 22 yards passing. Taft (2-3, 1-2) passed for 90 yards and rushed for 169 to outgain Chatsworth in total yardage, 269-168.

A 73-yard scoring run by Carter was called back because of a penalty in the third quarter. Carter led Taft runners with 75 yards in 17 carries.
