Girl, 16, Wins Fall Classic Tennis

San Diego’s Inga Kurta, 16, won the women’s open division of the first San Diego State/Sports Chalet Fall Classic tennis tournament at SDSU on Sunday. Kurta defeated Bettina Weineke, a graduate student at U.S. International, 6-2, 6-2.

In the men’s open final, University of San Diego freshman Kevin Bradley stretched New York City’s Ken Cuperstein to three sets, but lost, 6-3, 6-7, 6-4.

With a prequalifying victory at Pepperdine, San Diego State women’s tennis team member Eva Oliveras advanced to Tuesday’s qualifying tournament for the Riviera All-American Tennis Championship at the Riviera Tennis Club in Los Angeles.

Oliveras defeated Mississippi’s Nina Topper, 6-4, 6-2. Nancy Breen of Arizona stopped SDSU’s Nicole Storto, 6-3, 6-2. Aztecs’ Dorey Brandt and Susan Hawke automatically qualified for the main draw, beginning Friday.

MEN’S SOCCER

Mike Alberts was credited with assists in both of UC San Diego’s goals, as the Tritons defeated Occidental, 2-0, at UCSD. Craig Hyde scored at 19:20 and Carrick Brewster at 83:45. UCSD improved to 9-5-3. Occidental is 6-9-2.

With USD’s 3-2 West Coast Conference loss to St. Mary’s in Moraga, the Toreros have dropped four of their last five games. Leo Ronces and Sean Pinnell scored for USD (11-6-1, 0-3). St. Mary’s improved to 8-5-3, 3-1.

WOMEN’S SOCCER

UCSD, second-ranked in Division III, scored its 14th shutout and improved its record to 14-1 with a 2-0 victory over Cal Poly Pomona at UCSD. For the Tritons, Amy Wayte scored at 7:54 and Katy Dulock at 25:38. Cal Poly dropped to 5-9-2.

WATER POLO

Todd Sells and Jason Brown scored three goals each as the ninth-ranked Tritons upset eighth-ranked UC Santa Barbara, 9-5, in a nonconference game at UCSD (15-11). UCSD fell to 9-7.

JET SKIING

With his victory in the International Jet Ski Boating Assn.’s Jet Ski finals, El Cajon’s Jeff Jacobs became the first professional men’s competitor to win three consecutive world championships. Jacobs, 18, won the superstock and slalom races and finished second in the modified class in Lake Havasu City, Ariz. Escondido’s Victor Sheldon was second in the pro men’s division. In novice men’s, David Dela Cruz of Alpine won the modified race and placed second in the 550 limited class.
