San Fernando Offense Overwhelms Taft, 27-7

At Taft High, the words “offense” and “futile” are becoming synonymous.

Meanwhile, San Fernando’s only problem on offense is finding enough footballs to go around.

A host of Tiger running backs took turns pacing San Fernando to 402 yards in total offense and a 27-7 win over Taft Friday night in a Northwest Valley Conference game at Taft.

LaKarlos Townsend stood out from the Tiger crowd, running five times for 167 yards and two touchdowns. Johnny Carter ran 11 times for 95 yards and one touchdown.

San Fernando has won four consecutive games and is 4-3, 4-0 in league play. Taft, which opened the season by upsetting Servite, slipped to 2-4, 1-3.

San Fernando scored on the third play of the game when Townsend ran 78 yards up the middle.

Taft showed brief flashes of life in the first half but twice stalled short of the end zone.

Late in the second quarter, San Fernando put together an eight-play, 80-yard drive that ended when Vincent Hall dove one yard for a touchdown.

Early in the second half, the Tigers stretched their lead to 21-0 on Carter’s 24-yard touchdown run.

Taft finally scored with six minutes to play. Aided by two personal fouls against San Fernando, the Toreadors drove 54 yards, Irving Carter running the final eight yards for a touchdown.

Carter was a bright spot for Taft, rushing 16 times for 140 of his team’s 209 yards in offense.
