ON THE SIDELINES : Hank Greenberg’s Son Named Deputy Baseball Commissioner

Stephen Greenberg, son of Hall of Famer Hank Greenberg, was appointed deputy commissioner and chief operating officer of Major League Baseball, Commissioner Fay Vincent announced today.

Greenberg is an attorney and former managing partner of the Los Angeles law firm, Manhatt, Phelps, Rothenberg & Phillips. He will take office on Jan. 1.

Over the last 12 years, Greenberg has practiced various aspects of business law, including corporate and real estate matters, but has mostly specialized in sports law.

He has also represented more than 100 players in contract negotiations and other matters.

“Baseball has been my life for as long as I can remember,” Greenberg said. “I welcome the unique opportunity to work closely with Fay Vincent, a man whom I admire greatly, and look forward to being involved in the process of finding creative solutions to the challenges that face baseball in the months and years ahead.”

The Basic Agreement with the players’ association expires on Dec. 31, and some observers are predicting a strike.

Greenberg played minor league baseball in the Washington-Texas organization from 1970 to 1974. He was the first baseman for Spokane of the Class AAA Pacific Coast League in 1973 and 1974.
