From Times staff and wire service reports
Orange County fire officials blamed a malfunctioning electrical appliance today for a fire that caused an estimated $25,000 damage Wednesday evening to a Dana Point duplex. Barbara Hersh was not home when the blaze broke out in her Avenida Las Palmas apartment. Neighbors noticed the smoke and helped control the fire with garden hoses while awaiting arrival of firetrucks.
Orange County and San Clemente firefighters knocked down the flames in five minutes and rescued Hersh’s two cats.
