LA HABRA : Schools Fear Quake May Hurt Funding

Share

La Habra City School District officials fear that the Northern California earthquake will have a negative impact on funding for education beginning next year.

School board member Morrison Clements expressed fears that the tremendous cost of rebuilding highways will combine with other expenses to require reallocation of funds that might otherwise have gone to local schools.

Board members and staff seemed in agreement regarding the likelihood of serious cutbacks despite the announcement of a state-funded Supplemental Grant Program which is expected to provide the district with more than $300,000 in additional funds.

Staff members identified several projects that might qualify for the supplemental funds. Among these were the purchase of a bus, improvements to the district’s bilingual education program and assistance with implementation of a new language arts program.
