From Times staff and wire service reports

A wheelchair-bound man was in critical condition this morning after he rolled his chair into traffic on a Canoga Park street and was struck by a car, Los Angeles police said.

Greg Waller, 40, of Arleta was being treated for massive head and chest injuries at Holy Cross Medical Center in Mission Hills, officials said. He was injured at 10:05 p.m. Wednesday in the 21300 block of Sherman Way, Detective Anthony Bartolotto said.

Police were unsure whether Waller had been attempting to cross the street about 90 feet west of an intersection with Eton Avenue. Bartolotto said there were indications that Waller had been drinking, and witnesses said that before the accident he had rolled his wheelchair in front of other cars that swerved to avoid hitting him.

Waller was struck by a car driven eastbound by a 27-year-old Canoga Park woman. She was not cited in the accident.
