New guidelines on the teaching of evolution in California’s public schools were approved today by the state Board of Education, a move that both critics and supporters described as a concession to Christian fundamentalists.

The board voted 9 to 0 to approve the guidelines for science textbooks. The proposal had been adopted Wednesday by the board’s Policy and Planning Commission.

The state superintendent of public instruction, Bill Honig, said after helping draft changes in the guidelines before Wednesday’s vote that the amendments did not weaken the evolution language.
