Carson High, the defending City 4-A Division football champion, will resume its rivalry with Wilmington Banning tonight at 7 at Veterans Stadium in Long Beach, in front of a national television audience on cable’s SportsChannel America.

Carson, which leads the series, 19-16, beat Banning in the City 4-A Division championship game last season, 55-7.

“All of the games have been good, but last year’s championship game probably was my greatest moment,” said Carson Coach Gene Vollnogle, in his 27th year as head coach. Carson is the City’s top-ranked team, having lost only to La Puente Bishop Amat. Quarterback Armin Youngblood and receivers Michael Ross and Tydus Winans key the Colts’ offense.

Said Banning Coach Joe Dominguez, whose Pilots are 6-1-1: “We are a much better team than the way we have been playing. Television or not, we go into every game to win. This game is not any more special because it is on television.”

Banning, which lost to Crenshaw last Friday night, 20-18, will be led by senior quarterback John Ma’ae.
