DIGEST : Frazier Park’s Press Clinches Racing Title

Dan Press of Frazier Park, a former three-time Saugus Speedway Modified division champion, clinched the championship of the NASCAR All-American Challenge Series Southwest Tour on Saturday after finishing fourth in the season-ending AC-Delco 300 at Phoenix International Raceway.

Press, 40, completed his second season on the 20-race circuit with a tour-record eight victories and $38,585 in earnings. He had 12 top-five finishes and 3,069 points. Mike Chase of Bakersfield (2,906) finished second and Mike Kanke of Granada Hills (2,887) finished third.

Defending champion Roman Calczynski of Sepulveda finished fifth in points (2,743) and in earnings ($18,303).

Eddie Hill and Trenton Cornelius of Cleveland High each signed national letters of intent with Pacific 10 Conference schools Wednesday, the first day of the early-signing period for senior-class basketball players.

Hill (6-foot-1, 155 pounds), a guard, signed with Washington State. Cornelius (6-6, 210), a center-forward, signed with Washington.

Hill, who transferred to Cleveland from Burroughs before his junior season specifically to improve his chances of receiving a scholarship, becomes the third Cavalier this decade to sign with Washington State. Anthony Kidd and Keith Morrison also played for the Cougars.

Known for his perimeter shooting, Hill averaged 12.6 points a game last season as a part-time starter. Hill said that he and Cornelius already have scored above the NCAA-required 700 on the Scholastic Aptitude Test.

North Hollywood center-forward Dana Jones, a Times All-Valley selection who has committed to attend Pepperdine, said that he will sign a letter of intent today.

Mike Bryan of Camarillo defeated Wes Kinter of Pennsylvania, 6-4, 6-4, Sunday to win the McDonald’s 12-and-under Junior Tennis Invitational in Lexington, Ky.

Bob Bryan, 11, Mike’s twin, was eliminated in the quarterfinal round by North Carolina’s Shawn Thomas.
